Normandy, January 1960. Abel left his native Canada to go to France. He accompanied Valérie, the widow of her best friend Jacques, who was killed during the D-Day Landings in June 1944. For both of them, this is a painful pilgrimage. She wants to visit the grave of her late husband; he wants to find the beach where he landed and thus try to exorcise the memories of a period in his life marked by the trauma of violence and death. Tied in this quest for the past by a deeper feeling, they refrain from living it: Abel is always haunted by the guilt of having survived Jacques. During the stages of this journey along the Normandy coast, Abel was attacked by images of bombs and shells, prisoners and wounded.
